A brief history of Thalamus Publishing

Without knowledge of our past, we cannot truly know who we are. Thalamus Publishing is committed to bringing global history to life through the creation of highly readable text, exciting photographs, imaginative but accurate illustrations and the most accessible mapping in publishing.

There are two aspects to Thalamus Publishing: the first a publisher of books in the UK under our own imprint; the second a creative co-edition packager working with international publishers. In this last aspect, we have published 34 titles since 1998 and sold almost 2 million copies world wide in 17 languages with some of the best known names in international publishing. Many of our past books have appeared in Britain under the imprints of several publishers, but current titles now appear under Thalamus, as will forthcoming ones.

As a multi-talented team, we relish creating informative and entertaining books on all kinds of subjects. Our primary output is comprised of illustrated historical reference titles, but we have also created books about pet care, aviation, space exploration and knot tying (an enduringly popular subject). Book projects materialise from our very own interests and curiosity, or are push-started by specific requests from our foreign publishing partners.

You will find the titles listed available at fine bookshops throughout the world, and also online courtesy of friendly mail order people such as Amazon and Play.com.

Some History

Thalamus Publishing is the imprint of International Media Solutions Ltd. The company was founded as the result of a management buy-out of Prima Editions from American-owned Prima Publishing. In the mid-1980s the members of Thalamus Publishing’s creative team were the men behind Newsfield Publications, which brought the computer gaming population cult magazines CRASH and ZZAP!64, among many others.

Between then and the present day, we have been responsible for producing books on video games, popular music, national and extreme sports, as well as trading cards, stickers and sticker albums for Merlin-TOPPS, ‘learn to drive’ books for BSM and an annual hotels guide for motoring organisation RAC.

The cover of the first issue of CRASH magazine (January 1984) launched Newsfield Publications into a rocket ride of success in the first burst of popular computer gaming. CRASH became almost a way of life for thousands of Sinclair ZX Spectrum computer owners.

A year later, CRASH’s sister title ZZAP!64 for Commodore 64 owners, blazed a new trail in magazine fandom.
